Tips for a Room Makeover
If you want a new look for your room but feel overwhelmed at the prospect, you’re not alone. At Windows, Walls & More serving West Bloomfield, many of our customers express concern about redoing a room because they’re afraid they might “get it wrong.” That’s why we’re offering some tips below about how to approach the task. Check them out, and be sure to speak with one of our representatives for more!
The Room Surround
Many people like to tackle the walls first because they’re usually the biggest part of the room. If you want to add color, choose something that will set the tone. For example, neutrals like beige, cream, or gray can help make a good background for other elements of your decoration or design to pop. Or choose brighter colors to draw the eye. Add artwork at eye level, even if you have high ceilings. To avoid putting lots of holes in the walls, one way to “map” out placement is to take a picture of the wall and use an app or drawing feature to arrange the art.
Furnishings
Having the wrong flow in the room will make it feel wrong all around. Don’t overcrowd the room with pieces, but also be sure to have pieces that work for the function of the room. For example, if you plan to entertain in the space, be sure to account for places where your guests can set drinks. One way to help lay out the placement of the furniture is to map it out on graph paper. Measure and draw the room to scale, including windows, doors, and other immobile elements. Then measure and cut out scaled representations of each piece of furniture. (For example, on your graph paper, one square could represent one square foot.) Then you can easily move all the furniture around on your drawing, until you find the right layout that will work for the room and its flow.
Light in the Room
Lighting is an important aspect of a room—and changing the lighting can go a long way toward the final makeover without doing much else. Use natural light to your advantage. If your windows face south, for example, you’ll get plenty of direct light throughout the day, so you might want to have a window treatment that blocks it, such as shutters like Heritance® Wood Shutters from Hunter Douglas. Or you might choose something that will help beautifully diffuse light, such as Silhouette® Window Shadings. Also think about layers of lighting to create interest, intrigue, and variety. Plus, you’ll need lighting for nighttime hours that works for the way the room is used—brighter lighting for a workspace and more soothing lighting for a bedroom. Remember, making over your room lets you create a fresh look that’s tailored to your tastes. Feel free to be bold and choose things that are comfortable to you.
