The Practice of Hygge Using Custom Window Shades
Coming from the wintery world of Denmark, hygge has become a well-known practice here in the United States. And even though many people can practice hygge without being in the dead of winter, the season helps create a desire for comfort and warmth that hygge evokes. At Windows, Walls & More here in West Bloomfield, we love the idea of practicing hygge—and we’re happy to share some tips on how to add it to your life as well. Read on to learn more!
About Hygge
Pronounced “hyoo-guh,” they term hygge is all about slowing the pace and feeling connected to the world. Hygge helps people “find a healthier work-life balance, to be more in the moment, to build interpersonal relationships, and to turn off digital distractions,” said Tova Brandt, curator of Danish American culture at the Museum of Danish America in Elk Horn, Iowa. It is both a lifestyle movement and a way to evolve a home’s ambience and décor.
Think of It Like a Hug
The main goal of hygge (which comes from the same root as our English word for hug), is to create a sense of comfort and calm. So bringing it to your life is about evoking those senses daily—not about checking off “did I reach hygge?” boxes. When you entertain, you and your guests should wear comfy clothes and enjoy simpler foods and beverages. In terms of ambience, decorate with (and light!) candles—their soft glow is calming and restorative, and they evoke a feeling of being by a cozy fireplace. Use comfy textures such as warm knits and sherpa fabrics as accessories—and don’t be afraid to wrap up in them when you want. Finally, bring nature indoors—aspen or birch logs make great decorative elements, as can wreaths made of pine boughs or dried stems.
Give Yourself Some “Me” Space
Hygge is about slowing down and taking time for yourself, doing things like knitting or reading a book. And a cozy nook is a great place to do either. Find a calming corner to place a comfy armchair, and add a good reading lamp and a side table to rest a warm cider on. If you’re lucky enough to have a bay window, pit it to work as your relaxation station by adding plush pillows and the right window fashions to feel ensconced. One good choice is Provenance® Woven Wood Shades, which feel like they’ve brought nature inside. Or create a drapery “wall” so that the bay window is its own room. No matter the style, always go for what feels the most comfortable. That’s where you’ll achieve hygge.
