Selecting the Right Window Fashions

Hunter Douglas Window Fashions

At Windows, Walls & More here in West Bloomfield, our goal is to help each customer find the right window treatment to meet their particular needs and budget. With so many to choose from, that might seem like an overwhelming task! However, with just a little upfront thinking and research, you can narrow down the options pretty quickly. Read on to get some tips about how to do it.

Determine Your Goals

Before you go too far down the path of looking at potential options, you should determine your goals. That way, you won’t get your heart set on a treatment that looks great but doesn’t offer the functionality you need. Do you:

  • Want an unobstructed view?
  • Want protection from harmful UV rays?
  • Need privacy?
  • Need great light control?
  • Want to give some pizzazz to your room?
  • Need insulation at the window?

Consider Window Size and Shape and Treatment Functionality

The type of treatment you get might be dictated by the shape or size of your windows—not all treatments work well in octagonal windows, for example, and not all treatments can cover large expanses of windows. Plus, you might want to find something that coordinates with a treatment in another room, so fabric or material might be important. Furthermore, think about whether you want to tilt or lift the treatment to control privacy and light. Blinds and shutters are considered tilters because, for the most part you are only adjusting for the amount of light entering the room. Shades are considered lifters because you don’t have the ability to rotate them open or closed. They are either up or down. One great feature for a shade that adds more functionality is called top-down/bottom-up operation, which allows you to adjust light from the top or bottom or both.

Adding Warmth or a Pop of Color

Available in thousands of fabrics, colors, textures, and opacities, custom draperies and top treatments can bring your decorating style to life. If you want to just add softness or color to the room, you may want to consider stationary drapery panels instead of full draperies. If you want to be able to see out, look for sheer or semi-opaque fabrics. And, if you already have window coverings, add a valance or a cornice to create more interest in the room.
