Saving on Heating Bills
Winter is heading our way, and we all know how cold it can get around here. Many of us already know the score on how to winterize a home, but if you’re new to the West Bloomfield area, you might not have heard some of the tips on getting a house ready to keep as much hot air from escaping as possible. At Windows, Walls & More, we’re more than happy to offer some ideas. Read on!
Four Tips for Your Windows in Winter
Over 30% of a home’s heating and cooling costs can be lost through the window. To help keep cold air out and warm air in, consider weather-stripping your windows and doors. Look into caulking basement windows and storm windows. Be sure that your windows are locked, which will help them stay shut as tightly as possible. On sunny days this winter, keep the treatments on your exposed windows open to trap the solar heat—and on cloudy days and at night, keep them closed to prevent warm air from escaping.
Look in to Energy-Efficient Coverings
Products that are designed to insulate the window will give you the most energy-savings bang for the buck. Honeycomb shades, with their cellular construction, are the best. Hunter Douglas offers the Duette® Honeycomb Shade as well as the Applause® Honeycomb Shade, which actually has a double-cell construction that makes its insulating properties even better. If you need to treat a vertical opening like a slider or French doors, simply get the Vertiglide™ system on either Duette or Applause—it lets you turn those fabrics vertical for enhanced flexibility and great coordination with horizontal openings. Other Hunter Douglas products are also good at insulating windows, including Solera® Soft Shades, which combine a soft look with a unique cellular construction. The layered fabric does the job when it comes to insulating your room from the heat and cold. Also check out Sonnette™ Cellular Roller Shades, which gives you the look of a roller shade with the energy efficiency of a cellular shade. These shades are stylish and sleek and will transform any room through their control of light.
