Pairing Wallpaper and Fabric Patterns

By Susie Lezell

Pairing Wallpaper and Fabric Design ElementsMasterful use of mixing and matching patterns and colors is a cornerstone to exceptional interior design. At Windows, Walls & More serving Novi and the surrounding areas, we can help you create a beautiful room with wallpaper and custom fabric pieces. We have the largest wallpaper library in Michigan, and our talented designers can help you select the perfect pattern. To complete your room design, we offer custom fabric creation, including drapery, top treatments, bedding, pillows and more.

Here are some steps to get you started:

Choose a primary pattern. This main design element will be the first thing people notice when entering your room. It creates an inspiration for the room and sets the stage for a particular theme. It may be a damask wallpaper or soft flowing drapes.

Choose a secondary color or pattern. This next color is often made up of colors pulled from the primary pattern. If your dominant design element is a wallpaper pattern, then you may want to pull out a solid color from that pattern as the secondary design element. Or, those roles may be reversed where your furniture, drapes, or area rug create the primary pattern, and your wallpaper is secondary.

Choose accent colors. Using decorating color palettes or themed color patterns, pull out accent colors from primary and secondary design elements. Custom fabric pillows, window toppers, accessories, and wall hangings can come together to subtly present gorgeous decorating accents.

Make Your Room Design as Unique as You Are

Often, rooms have one primary pattern or color, one secondary color or pattern, and two to three accent colors. There are no hard-and-fast rules to this, though, and you may decide to mix it up in ways special and unique to you. When working with different patterns and colors in a room, be careful not to isolate them or use them just one at a time. Decorate your room so that each pattern or color you introduce is used in a few places to keep the eye moving from one area of the room to another.

Sometimes the hardest part of redecorating a room is just getting started. Stop by our showroom in West Bloomfield for a consultation. Starting with wallpaper will help you focus on a primary pattern or color, and choosing fabric elements and accessories will come naturally. We’re here to help!
