Light is an important component of every room—it sets the mood, helps you work, or makes you relax. That’s why it’s important to determine the type of light each room needs. If you’ve been to the lighting aisle in your local hardware store, you might have gotten overwhelmed as you tried to sort through it. But never fear. At Windows, Walls & More here in West Bloomfield, we can help you with the ins and outs of room lighting. Read on to learn more!
Choosing the Right LED Lightbulbs
Gone are the days of determining which bulb to use based on watts. Instead, the important information with LED bulbs is how many lumens it projects (a measure of brightness, usually a range from 300 to 1,600 per bulb) and its temperature (typically a range from 2700 to 6500 Kelvin). The lower the Kelvin rating, the warmer the light (for a cozier feel); higher temperatures produce cool whites (blues) that imitate daylight (better for completing tasks), and medium temperatures produce neutral white light. Each room requires different total amounts of each. For example:
- Living rooms are gathering spaces for TV, movies, game night, and hanging out. You’ll want numerous sources of light (both from above and below). Avoid blue lighting that energizes, and choose lights that will total 2,000 to 3,500 lumens for the room, with color temperature around 2,700 Kelvin.
- Bedrooms are for winding down and getting good rest, so you’ll want a lower total Kelvin rating. Shoot for between 2,500 and 4,000 lumens, with a temperature of 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin.
- The kitchen is for cooking and cleanup, so lots workspace light is important. Overall suggested kitchen brightness is 5,000 to 9,000 lumens, with a temperature of around 4,000 Kelvin.
- If you have a home office, you want to be energized by the light around you, so finding bluer tones (cool whites) that mimic daylight will be best. Suggested overall brightness for the home office is 3,000 to 5,000 lumens, with a temperature of 3,500 to 4,500 Kelvin.
