Differences in Interior Design Styles

Vignette Roman Shades

Everyone has different tastes, and that’s often reflected in how they style their homes. However, some people are unsure about how to label their style—is it traditional? Is it minimalist? And it’s especially confusing when the choices might seem to be the same thing. Such is the case with modern and contemporary styles, which, although their names seem interchangeable, are actually two distinctly different looks. At Windows, Walls & More, we’re here to help untangle some of the terminology and make understanding design more accessible. Read on!

Modern or Contemporary?

The terms “modern” and “contemporary” are associated with two different styles. “Contemporary” refers to what’s current, while “modern” means “mid-century modern,” which originated around the 1950s. Contemporary style is more fluid—in fact, it could mean something different five years from now than it does today. But modern style is always generally the same, with a focus on warm neutrals and crisp lines.

Window Treatments for Each Style

If you’re looking to enhance your contemporary style, check out blinds made of metal for a sleek look in your space. Hunter Douglas makes Modern Precious Metals® in a wide range of finishes, such as metallics, mattes, and pearlescent colors, so you can accentuate your windows and your room. For a modern style, you’ll do best with treatments in earthy colors or bright whites or that are made of natural materials. Choose wood blinds or shutters, drapery, or shades. Wood blinds work well because they stand the test of time, both in style and in durability, and they bring the beauty of the outdoors in. Parkland® Wood Blinds from Hunter Douglas are made from real hardwoods, like cherry, basswood, and oak. Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ Shutters are made from faux wood, but they look just like the real thing while being more durable and better able to withstand peeling, chipping, warping, cracking, and fading.

Mix Them!

For some people, both modern and contemporary looks resonate. So why not blend them? You can find a great blend in custom draperies. They are clean and uncluttered for an approach that can complement any style. And drapery fits with either a modern or contemporary look, either as a standalone treatment or paired with an existing window covering. Drapery works well on larger windows, can emphasize the lines of a room, and helps cut light gaps on existing treatments.
