Are Curtains and Drapes the Same?
At Windows, Walls & More here in West Bloomfield, many of our customers ask for curtains when they mean drapes or vice versa. That’s because, although the two styles are similar, they aren’t the same—even though many people use the terms interchangeably. But there are noticeable differences, as we outline below. Read on to learn more, and be sure to speak with one of our consultants if you think one of the styles might be right for your home.
Types of Fabric
The main difference between curtains is drapery is in the fabric—its type and its length. With drapery, you’ll usually choose a thicker fabric like velvet, and they’re frequently lined for insulation and to block glare. Those thicker fabrics tend to make drapes look more formal, and so does their longer cut—they usually floor length or longer (to “puddle” beneath the window) and can sometimes be hung from the ceiling as well. On the flip side, curtains are usually made from sheer fabrics, like cotton, so they let more natural light into the room and create a more casual vibe. Plus, curtains tend to be cut shorter—just at the windowsill or slightly below. Because they’re more formal and longer, drapes are do well in living and bedrooms, while shorter and more casual curtains are better for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.
Functionality Differences
Drapes will provide more privacy and light control, and, with their heavier and longer fabric, they can block light and absorb sound. For more natural light with less assurance of privacy, curtains are the answer. They might be installed differently as well—while both can hang on a rod, curtains, with their lighter fabric, can hang on a tension rod, but drapery can’t.
Difference in Maintenance
The thicker, more formal drapery requires professional cleaning. Curtains, on the other hand, can be washed at home on a gentle cycle in cool water. No matter your choice, curtains or drapes, the Hunter Douglas Design Studio™ offers a wide array of fabrics and hardware to create your unique look at your window. Be sure to speak with one of our representatives to see the options in person.
